Indigo Delicatessen owned by DeGustibus Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. is a known name in the food industry. It created ripples in the Mumbai food scene when it first opened in 2005. Rahul Akerkar along with Chef Jaydeep Mukherjee carefully crafted a very unique menu that feels like a breath of fresh air.
I was really keen to try the deli that opened in Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj. New Delhi, celebrationg the 10th Anniversary of their first outlet in Mumbai, but I got chance only recently. The focus of the place is, in big letters, FOOD, and on that front they are spot on. The interiors are too casual and the furniture esp. the round seating becomes a bit congested when four or more people try to fit in. Coming to the food, their menu is really vast and consists of dishes that cannot fit into any particular cuisine, but can well be described as Chef’s creations.
They had a new burger menu only for a single day, but they do plan to include the new burgers in their regular menu soon. In non veg we ordered a Braised Pork Belly Vinagrette, Spring Onion and Slaw Burger and in veg we ordered Roasted Root Vegetables and Smoked Cheese Burger. The pork belly in the non veg burger was tender, melt in the mouth and full of flavour. The patty inside the veg burger tasted of the commonly used root vegetables like potato, beetroot and carrots. There was absolutely no compromise on the ingredients used and they were of top quality. The accompanying potato wedges were very crispy and one of the best I’ve had.
Coming to the cocktails Mudslide Extreme was simply divine. The taste of vodka, Baileys, Kahlua and fresh cream gelled beautifully well and it was a delight to the tastebuds. Deli Sangria was sweeter than the usual Sangria with added orange liqueur and grape juice, but still tasted good. Red Lime was also quite good. It was basically vodka with watermelon juice with added kafir lime leaves and lime wedges. To accompany the cocktails we were served fried squids, which were very fresh and crispy.
On the previous day they had a special menu consisting of American food truck style fast food. We were keen to try some of the items from last day’s menu and the manager gladly got few of the special items prepared by the chef- Fried Mac with Cheese, Onion Rings and Fried Shrimps. Again, there was no compromise on the ingredients and everything was made with perfection. The sauces drizzled on top of the dishes consisted mostly of Hollandaise, mayo and molten cheese.
We were specially served a half n half pizza. One half consisted of Parma ham, Asparagus and Scarmoza (a kind of Italian cheese) and the other half consisted of Creamed Spinach, Roasted Mushroom and again Scarmoza. The crust of the pizza was wafer thin and it felt like I was having a crispy tortilla. The veg pizza was tastier than the non veg one as the creamy spinach and the mushroom did wonders. It was also the most unique pizza flavours I’ve ever had. The non veg one was also pretty flavourful. The ultra thin Parma ham with crispy thin tortilla is like a food lover’s dream come true.
Tiramisu had a very strong flavour of coffee so it was just about ok. Flourless Chocolate Orange Cake with Orange Sorbet was extremely well made and so were the Waffles. I like my waffles with Maple Syrup and a bit of honey. There was a huge variety of homemade ice creams and we tried baileys. As usual not much can go wrong with Bailey’s and it was fantastic.
Considering the casual seating of the place, the prices seem a bit on the higher side, but the taste of the food compensates for it and you will feel like thanking the geniuses behind this concept for giving you a menu that the majority of fine dine restaurants will just dream of recreating.
