Queen’s University food safety expert Scott Lougheed says consumers should be cautious. “Botulism is not terribly common, but it is potentially deadly. These are products with long shelf lives and consumers may have purchased these products a long time ago. Consumers should not trust their eyes or nose to check product safety.”
What should you do?
If you think you’ve become sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.
If you have the recalled products in your home, throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased.
Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, blurred or double vision, dry mouth, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
