The satirical eighties play ‘Woza Albert!’, penned by Percy Mtwa, Mbongeni Ngema and Barney Simon in 1981, is currently being revived at The Fringe at Joburg Theatre, with Mncedisi Shabangu and Hamilton Dhlamini playing the roles of various black South Africans – a vendor, barber, domestic worker, manual labourer and soldier – receiving the news that Christ (Morena) has arrived in South Africa, where a Calvinist white elite imposes apartheid.
The two theatre veterans show off their skills in acting, mime, singing and dance in the production. They also create images using minimal words and actions.
The play concerns people waiting for a Morena, a Christ or saviour, to come and save them from their plight. Set in Apartheid South Africa in the 1970s, the actors perform with humour in spite of the hardships the characters go through.
* ‘Woza Albert’ is running until February 19.
Performances take place at 10am from Tuesdays to Fridays, and at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Tickets can be booked at www.joburgtheatre.com, or on 0861 670 670; or via www.webtickets.co.za; or at any at any Pick ’n Pay store.
