Men to take on the streets in the Hollard Daredevil Run 2017 in support of male cancer awareness.
Cape Town’s bravest men will take to the streets in peak-hour traffic to run cancer outta town at the Hollard Daredevil Run 2017, taking place on Friday 24 March at 15h00, where the annual event will coincide with satellite venues across the country.
The Run aims to raise awareness of male cancers and the importance of early detection, by encouraging men of all ages, shapes and sizes to run (or walk) along a five-kilometre route in support of the cause. Daredevils will run a designated route, starting at the Greenpoint Salesian Football Club and making their way through the city towards the finish line.
“The Hollard Daredevil Run proves that it’s easier to run in a Speedo than it is to fight cancer, and Hollard is honoured to help spread this message far and wide,” says Warwick Bloom, Marketing Communications Manager at Hollard. “We call on all men, no matter how old or what shape they’re in, to take on the challenge in raising awareness for this important cause.”
Cancer stats to scare the pants off you
While the Daredevil Run has had a remarkably positive impact on cancer awareness around the country, statistics indicate an alarming increase in male cancer incidences in South Africa. According to research from the National Cancer Registry, there has been a 32% increase in prostate cancer cases in the past year alone, with one in 19 men at risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime.
“The Hollard Daredevil Run has seen such impressive growth and increased popularity since it first began, and it’s because of the Run’s impact that we are able to reach more men and convey the message that early detection saves lives,” says Elize Joubert, CANSA CEO. “We are proud to be part of this initiative, and are grateful to Daredevils across the country for supporting this cause.”
All proceeds from the run will go to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) to fund cancer awareness programmes as well as its MANVan initiative – a mobile health clinic which travels across the country providing free cancer testing to underprivileged communities. Following the success of the 2016 Hollard Daredevil Run, the MANVan reached and screened an impressive 8,112 men throughout the country.

Runners are welcome to bring their loved ones and fans to cheer them on from the side-lines on the day, as the run is restricted to Speedo-clad men and boys.
