Gesundheit According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. For millions of Americans, allergies can be a major health concern and a strict limitation on their quality of life. Researchers believe that 50 million Americans suffer from nasal allergies, while the number of allergy sufferers continues to increase year over year. In fact, more than $18 billion is spent each year on allergy treatment. Luckily, the Daytona Beach area is one of the best places to live if you are a chronic allergy sufferer according to annual research conducted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

The AAFA’s 2016 Fall Allergy Capitals™ Report which ranks the 100 largest cities in the continental United States, lists Daytona Beach, Florida 96th for “Most Challenging Places to Live with Fall Allergies”. In essence, this makes Daytona Beach the 4th best location for allergy sufferers to live, with the top three being Sacramento, San Jose, and Portland,Oregon. Central Florida is already a popular destination for retirement, vacation, and relocation due to the outstanding weather, beautiful beaches, and array of area attractions, but maybe a strong portion of why so many flock to the World’s Most Famous Beach is the relief they feel from those pesky allergies. While the list names Daytona Beach specifically, it is a fair assessment to say that Port Orange, Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet, and our surrounding cities are also providing a climate that does not create major allergy concerns.

This annual study measures and analyzes the seasonal pollen score, the allergy medicine utilization per patient, and the number of board certified allergists per patient in each given area to determine the best and worst cities in the United States for allergy sufferers. The Daytona Beach ranking scored below average for the pollen score and medicine utilization, while scoring on average with the number of board certified allergists per patient.

Studies like this one have many people taking notice. A recent article by WebMD ranked Daytona Beach as the 10th best city nationwide for allergy sufferers, with no other Florida cities listed. The other nine on this list were more Pacific-Northwest cities, with Albany, New York being the only other east coast entry. We have nothing against Albany, but we can say with certainty that we have better beaches here, and currently, much better weather.
