2017 Volvo XC90 – Powertrain Specifications:
The 2017 Volvo XC90 offers not just 1 but 3 different powertrain options for various performance flavors.
First off, there’s a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine that pairs up with an 8-speed automatic transmission system. This engine also comes standard with an all-wheel-drive (even on the base model). The net output figures of this engine go as 250 HP at 5,600 RPM and 258 lb-ft torque at 4,500 RPM. These improved engine outputs combine with a fuel economy rating of 22 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on highways and 24 mpg on a combined scale. What’s most interesting is that despite the impressive fuel savings, max towing capacity checks in around 4,000 lbs.
Next up is the turbocharged version of the same engine (aka T6). This engine mates with the same 8-speed automatic transmission system and includes the availability of a front wheel drive. The total outputs of this engine reach as much as 316 HP and 295 lb-ft torque.
3rd in the line-up is (according to Volvo officials) the most expensive engine – T8 “Twin Engine” (which is basically a plug-in hybrid engine). The hybrid powertrain includes a 34 kW (46 HP) electric motor cum generator between the final driveshaft and transmission system. Besides contributing to the hybrid system’s net output, the motor/generator helps in recharging the battery during engine overrun. In total, the hybrid powertrain’s final output checks at around 470 lb-ft torque and 400 HP of power.
Price and Competitors:
This new 2017 Volvo XC90 comes with a starting price of $46,500. It will compete against vehicles like Audi Q7 and Acura MDX.
The new generation changes have influenced the front fascia as it now looks more pronounced. This upscale styling is complemented by redesigned headlights that retain “Thor’s Hammer” signature styling of LED daytime running lights. Like before, the signature grille keeps the vertical chrome bars. Inside, some things changed while others remain the same. The dash is now much cleaner as Volvo has gotten rid of all the control gibberish.
