I agree that Mafia should be played live, via immediate face-to-face communication. Although, if you have a bunch of people that are willing to sit together in a room for an indefinite period of time listening to a moderator storytelling your way through the game... then you must be in the geekiest group ever.

Also, the game contains within itself a big confusing contradiction... On one hand, a player is encouraged to approach the game with enthusiasm, competitive spirit and authentic will to ensure victory for his team. On the other hand, a player should not be ''too'' competitive, because there are always so many ways how a player can easily cheat and thus acquire too much of an advantage.

I feel this contradiction is the main reason why this game is to this day widely considered as a mere childrens' make-believe game.

There are a lot of sites where you can play Mafia online. All of them have an entire page about what is allowed and what is not allowed during the game. ''"You shouldn't use external messaging apps, shouldn't disclose your communication with moderator, shouldn't take screenshots and share them with other players..."''
