Environmentalists are urging the Illinois Pollution Control Board to call for stricter cleaning standards for coal-fired power plants.
The IPCB will hold a public hearing at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Pekin City Council chambers.
Area residents are concerned about pollution coming from Dynegy’s E.D. Edwards plant in Bartonville and the Dynegy’s Powerton plant in Pekin.
“It is high time these companies do the right thing and clean up,” says Joyce Blumenshine with the Central Illinois Healthy Community Alliance.
Larry Carrigan is a retired laborer who worked in those plants.
“I have asthma, COPD and other pulmonary issues,” Carrigan said during a news conference Monday across from the Edwards plant.
The ICPB will take testimony on the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s plan toward a proposed sulfur dioxide cleanup plan.
