A week ago, Pro Stock Chris McGaha had a memorable outing at the Sonoma (Calif.) Nationals, qualifying No. 1 and then winning his inaugural Pro Stock NHRA national event.

McGaha kept things rolling at the the Northwest Nationals in Seattle, capturing the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday with a track record 6.501-second run at 212.86 mph.

McGaha’s elapsed time was identical to Jeg Coughlin’s run Friday, but McGaha took the top spot based on his faster mph than Coughlin, who came across at 212.59 mph.

“That is kind of shocking,” McGaha said about his elapsed time taking the No. 1 spot. “We figured it was going to be better (Saturday), but because it was so wet and humid we didn’t really know (how it was going to be). Then the clouds started going away and the sun came out and the starting line can’t take it. Then here came the cloud cover and then we swung for the fence.”

McGaha’s run came during his fourth and final qualifying lap.

This was McGaha’s seventh No. 1 qualifying honor in his Pro Stock career and fifth this season. McGaha also was the top qualifier at Gainesville, Fla., Charlotte, N.C., Epping and Sonoma.

McGaha’s effort Saturday in his Harlow Sammons of Odessa, Texas Camaro was impressive because his best run Friday was 6.529 seconds which was the 10th fastest run.

“I honestly thought somebody else would go faster than us (Saturday in the final qualifying session),” McGaha said. “I knew we made a good run, but I surely thought someone would go faster than us. We swung and I was sure somebody else had to swing that went fast (Friday). Maybe we really did mess up bad (Friday) and made we could have went (6)49. It’s hard to say at this point.”

McGaha acknowledged he’s riding the wave of momentum of his recent success.

“I have a lot of confidence right now,” McGaha said. “I’m always working on my driving. You go off your heel, your toe, you do this and you move the linkage and apparently I have found something I’m starting to like. We are going to try and do the same thing we did last week (at Sonoma). We are going to try and change nothing and do exactly what we did. I even woke up last week in Sonoma and I put my socks on and I have right and left socks and for some reason I had two rights and they are washed waiting in the suitcase and I’m going to wear them (Sunday).”
